Questions To Ask The Seller

Where is the car located?

Has the gar been garaged?

How long have you owned the car?

Name and number of previous owners?

What is the price of the car?
(It is my opinion that it is best to ask the question just this way, not "How much are you asking?", "What is the least you are willing to take?", etc. The question will be asked again as one of the final questions after you have discussed problems with the car.  If you have ever attempted to sell anything, remember how it felt when the potential buyer asked "How much is the price?".  If you are like most people, the thought of "is my price to high" or "am I asking enough" flashed through your mind and caused at least a moment of discomfort.  This is one reason I like to ask at least one "non-threatening" question, such as location, before asking the price question.)

Is the car currently registered and licensed?

How many miles on the car?

How often is the car driven?

How does it drive?

Any exhaust smoke?

How old are the muffler/brakes/shocks?

Any muffler noise?

How many miles in the last year?

Do you participate in a car club?

Has the car ever been judged in a competition? How did it due?

Has the car been restored?
Obviously there is no need to ask if the car is priced at the low end of the scale.   If the car has been restored, ask "When?" and "Who did the restoration?".   If the car was professionally restored, get the name and location of the restorer.   This could be very helpful later if repairs are needed.  Another question is "How many miles driven since the restoration?".

Has the car ever been hit or wrecked?

Has the car ever been stolen?

Has the car ever been rolled?

Has the car ever had a fire?

Has any body work been done? (When, who, why)

How does the car look? (Remember, this is comparable to asking someone if their child is cute.)

What regular maintenance has been done?

How often was the oil changed and when was the last change?

Who does your engine/drive train repairs? (Name,address,phone number)

Are there any maintenance/repair records?

Has the car passed emmisions recently?

What kind of gas mileage does the car get?

How old are the tires?

How old is the battery?

Has there been any recent mechanical work? What, where, receipts

What remains to be done or corrected?

Are there any missing parts?

What new or aftermarket parts have been installed?

Are the engine, transmission, differential, steering, wheels original?

Has the car ever been raced?

Has the engine been modified?

How much rust?

Has the car been painted? When, original color?

What is the condition of the top, windows, tonneau cover?

What is the condition of the upholstery, carpets, dash?

Do you have any owner’s manual, repair manuals, history or general interest books, parts catalogs, club newsletters?

What tools go with the car?

Condition and existance of spare tire, jack?

Is there any interesting history?

Why are you selling?

Taking into account the....., Would you consider .....? Price
